The printed page became a major battleground during the Cold War, with all sides using books and other printed materials – magazine, posters, brochures, pamphlets – as weapons to persuade others of the justness of their cause. Even though much of the resulting literature is closer to propaganda than fact, it is an important part of the legacy of those troubled times, as essential to the knowledge base of the collector as it is to the historian.
Collectors who have not had the opportunity of looking at books published in Russia during the Soviet period and especially in the years following are in for a treat. Many of the books are first-rate in every way. Often they deal with unique topics not discussed anywhere else, and illuminate the past with a combination of revealing photographs and excellent quality color plates.
Seeing is believing, as they say, and even a quick glance through the books below should be enough to show how historically enriching they can be despite the language barrier.
