The East German armed forces, police and other agencies followed German tradition in wearing distinctive cloth and metal insignia for quick identification of unit and rank.
These collar tabs (or collar patches), as they are generally known, shared many similarities and continued to have the same general appearance after being standardized between 1956-65. Such changes as did take place were more the result of how the collar tabs were manufactured than how they looked, with wool giving way to polyester as the preferred construction material. Where relevant, the changes will be discussed below.
